* * * *

Ethan’s house, much like Holden’s parents’, sat off a long dirt road. Devry looked out of the window as Holden’s truck bumped along. “Do you think we should have brought something?”

Glancing at his lover, Holden smiled before turning his attention back to the road. “I’m sure Ethan and Livia have everything well in hand. I talked to him while you were trying to find a shirt—he said they have everything under control.”

As they drew closer to the house, the smell of meat grilling wafted in through the open windows.

Devry lifted the large black sunglasses covering his eyes, seeing a few people sitting in the front yard while a grill smoked away. “Every time I think I’ve gotten a handle on the way things are around here, I get thrown something new.”

“What does that mean?” Holden laughed out as they turned down the driveway.

“You have cookouts in the front yard?”

“Some people do, yes. I didn’t know that was gonna be a problem.”

Devry shrugged as the truck stopped. “It’s not a problem, just a little different.” He smiled and opened his door. “But, as I’m finding out—different is definitely not bad.” With a wink, he closed the door.

Laughing, Holden got out of the truck and joined Devry in front of it. He grabbed his hand and pressed a delicate kiss to it. “I love you.”

Devry looked up at him and smiled. “I love you, too.”

They walked to the small group and greeted their host.

Ethan whirled around from the grill, raising the spatula in his hand as he grinned. “I was beginning to think you blew this get together off to start out for Greenely.”

“Devry couldn’t find a shirt he liked. He wanted to make a good impression on Livia,” Holden replied while giving Devry’s hand a gentle squeeze.

Cole raised an eyebrow as he assessed Devry. “And that’s the one you chose?”

Devry looked down at his shirt. “What’s wrong with it?” He dropped Holden’s hand and tugged at the cotton, feeling more self-conscious than he had before.

Holden rolled his eyes. “It looks fine, baby.” Then he glared at his friend. “Lay off him, Cole.”

“I’m just kidding. He can’t take a joke?”

A feminine sigh broke through the tension beginning to build. “Jesus, Cole. If that’s your idea of saying hello, I’m not surprised you don’t have any friends,” a young woman said as she walked down the steps from the house. She smiled at Devry. “I’m Livia.” She handed the plate of hamburgers she held to Ethan and extended her hand to Devry.

“I have friends,” Cole mumbled, clearly hurt.

Livia looked at him. “Um…local law enforcement doesn’t count, Cole.” She glanced back at Devry when he took her hand. “It’s nice to meet the person who finally took down Holden Reid.”

Devry peered at Holden as a grin slowly formed on his face. “Does everyone refer to you by your first and last name?” he asked.

“Yes, we do,” Ethan answered, continuing the task of placing a few hamburgers on the grill.

“Do you want something to drink?” Livia asked, looking from Devry to Holden and back.
